马来西亚人名怎么看姓和名

马来西亚有三套主要的命名习惯,看懂名字的第一步是先认出它属于哪一套。

马来人:没有家族姓氏,用父亲的名字

马来人的名字由本名和父名组成,中间用 bin(某某之子)或 binti(某某之女)连接。

印裔:A/L 和 A/P

印裔的结构和马来人类似,本名在前,父名在后,中间用 A/L(anak lelaki,儿子)或 A/P(anak perempuan,女儿)隔开。有时也会看到 S/O、D/O。

Kavitha a/p Ramasamy本名 Kavitha,父亲叫 Ramasamy,女性。

Tan、Lim、Ng 分别是什么姓?

Tan 多为陈,Lim 多为林,Ng 可能是黄或吴,取决于方言。拼写只能提示读音,确切的汉字需要问本人。

名字里没有 bin,怎么判断?

很多马来人日常会省略 bin/binti。这时最后一个词通常是父名,但并不绝对,本工具会把这类结果标为低置信度。

anak 是什么意思?

anak 在马来语里是"孩子"。砂拉越伊班族等原住民常用"本名 anak 父名"的结构,作用与 bin/binti 相同,但不区分男女。

How to read a Malaysian name

Malaysia has three main naming systems. The first step is recognising which one a name follows.

Malay: no family name, just the father's name

A Malay name is a personal name followed by the father's name, joined by bin (son of) or binti (daughter of). Because the father's name changes every generation, family members do not share a surname. Women keep their names after marriage.

Ahmad Faizal bin IsmailPersonal name Ahmad Faizal, father Ismail. Address him as Encik Ahmad Faizal, not Mr Ismail.

Bin and binti are often dropped or shortened to B., Bt. or Bte., which foreigners sometimes mistake for a middle initial. Mohd and Abd are short for Mohammad and Abdul.

Chinese: surname first, spelled by dialect

Malaysian Chinese use a family name placed first. The spelling follows the family's dialect and is fixed at registration, so the same surname 陈 can appear as Tan (Hokkien), Chan (Cantonese) or Chin (Hakka). Given names since the 1980s are often in Hanyu Pinyin, producing mixes like Tan Hui Jie.

Michelle Tan Hui JieEnglish name Michelle, surname Tan, given name Hui Jie. The English name usually comes first.

Indian: A/L and A/P

Malaysian Indian names follow the same pattern as Malay names: personal name, then father's name, separated by A/L (anak lelaki, son) or A/P (anak perempuan, daughter). S/O and D/O also appear.

Kavitha a/p RamasamyPersonal name Kavitha, father Ramasamy, female.

Titles in front of the name

Tun, Tan Sri, Datuk and Dato' are honours; Haji and Hajah mark completion of the pilgrimage; Dr and Ir are academic or professional titles. None of these are part of the name and they don't belong in name fields. Tengku, Raja, Syed, Sharifah, Wan and Nik are hereditary and usually part of the legal name, so keep them.

Filling in passports and forms

A Malaysian passport prints the full name on one line with no separate surname field. On foreign airline, visa or hotel forms, Malay and Indian names usually go in as father's name for Surname and personal name for Given name; Chinese names put the family name in Surname and everything else, including any English name, in Given name. Always follow the document and the receiving organisation's rules.

Questions

Is the word after bin a surname?

Not strictly. It is the father's personal name and isn't passed down. On foreign forms that require a surname, it is usually entered there.

What do Tan, Lim and Ng correspond to?

Tan is usually 陈, Lim usually 林, and Ng can be 黄 or 吴 depending on dialect. Spelling only hints at pronunciation; ask the person for the exact characters.

What if there's no bin in the name?

Many Malays drop bin and binti in everyday use. The last word is then usually the father's name, but not always, so the tool marks these results as low confidence.

What does anak mean?

Anak means child in Malay. Iban and other Sarawak communities use "name anak father's name", which works like bin/binti but isn't gendered.
